When it comes to the brain, just how different are men and women? It turns out, there are additional differences in grey matter and brain patterns as well. See what it all means for you and your health. Although the male brain is 10 percent larger than the female brain, it does not impact intelligence. One area in which they do differ is the inferior-parietal lobule, which tends to be larger in men.

We like to think that men and women are fundamentally the same, excepting their reproductive organs. We all want the same rights and opportunities, and for some things, such as women's suffrage, it was a long, hard fight to achieve equal footing. As a result, we're often appalled at stereotypical suggestions that the sexes might be different. Witness the reaction to the Barbie doll who said "Math class is tough! In , there was controversy surrounding Harvard president Lawrence Summers when he suggested there were innate reasons for why women did not perform as well as men on tests of math and science. Men, on the other hand, have staged massive protests over any silver screen depiction that paints them as merely beer-swilling, football-watching couch potatoes with the vocabulary of cavemen. OK, so we invented that last example, but just because we can't track down a concrete example of such a protest doesn't mean that men aren't the tiniest bit irked. Still, we do seem to realize that as much as we'd like everything to be equal between men and women, there are differences in how we go about things. The sales of glossy magazines that promise to teach you how to work with someone of the opposite gender as well as self-help books along the lines of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" are proof that we need a little help understanding what's going on inside the heads of men and women. As it turns out, it may be better to turn to neuroscience rather than to Cosmopolitan magazine to figure out what's going on inside that guy's brain.

Gender equality , also known as sexual equality or equality of the sexes , is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations and needs equally, regardless of gender. To avoid complication, other genders besides women and men will not be treated in this gender equality article. Gender equality is the goal, while gender neutrality and gender equity are practices and ways of thinking that help in achieving the goal.
An artificially coloured 3D magnetic resonance imaging scan of a human brain. Haier et al. NeuroImage 25 , —; I woke one morning in to see an especially bad extrapolation of this study on the Early Show , a programme on US television network CBS. The history of sex-difference research is rife with innumeracy, misinterpretation, publication bias, weak statistical power, inadequate controls and worse. Rippon, a leading voice against the bad neuroscience of sex differences, uncovers so many examples in this ambitious book that she uses a whack-a-mole metaphor to evoke the eternal cycle. And it has exploded in the past three decades, since MRI research joined the fray.
