The Lowdown: As side effects of poptimism go, the retrospective mea culpa is relatively innocuous and even beneficial. That record, Imperfect Circle , arrives this week, and unfortunately gives us the chance to explore another facet of poptimism: its limits. The Good: Holmes and the rest of his fellow Hootie apologists will find at least some measure of vindication in the music of Imperfect Circle. Chiefly, the record provides a showcase for the unaging baritone of Darius Rucker , whose voice remains undiminished a quarter century after it first turned heads. Those songs deserve a reassessment. Imperfect Circle will undoubtedly please diehards and nostalgists. However, the rest of us would be better off atoning for the snootiness of the past than abetting the blandness of the present. The album was announced in December , along with their Group Therapy Tour , the first outing the band had made since To promote the album, the single "Rollin'" was made available with pre-orders on their site and to the general public on September 6. The band's hometown paper, The Post and Courier ran a negative review written by Associated Press writer Mark Kennedy, who acknowledged some solid musicality but ultimately concluded that the album is made up of "utterly forgettable songs" and "nothing on this album is fresh". Album Review: Mo Pitney’s ‘Ain’t Lookin’ Back’
Yes, their music was beige by contrast, but there was also a timeless charm that emanated from such appealingly tuneful and well crafted songs. Besides, sometimes you just want to have a beer, engage in a little romance and sing along to easily digestible music that makes you forget your troubles for a while. The mix is equally pleasing, allowing every instrumental lick, particularly on calypso ditty Turn It Up, to pop out the speakers. Yet the frontman also dominates a little too much and, consequently, the record often sounds like one of his country efforts with the Hootie boys merely acting as session musicians.
The separation wasn't acrimonious. The group got together occasionally to play charity shows or to bid adieu to David Letterman , but they didn't officially reunite until their debut album, Cracked Rear View , reached its 25th anniversary in To celebrate, they launched a tour and recorded a brand-new album called Imperfect Circle. Working with producers Jeff Trott and Frank Rogers the latter penned and helmed some early solo hits for Rucker , Hootie manage to strike a nice blend between the group's signature college rock singalongs and Rucker 's slick, cheerful solo work. The surface of Imperfect Circle is every bit as slick as a big-budget project coming out of the Music City -- not for nothing is this released on Capitol Nashville -- but the band doesn't take any left turns into honky tonks, not even when they record "Hold On," a song co-written by Chris Stapleton.
