The YYPA Competition recognizes outstanding young musicians studying in the United States who excel in jazz, classical, and contemporary genres. Winners of the competition demonstrated superior technical skill and artistry, according to the YYPA press release. Zheng is currently in his fourth year at Northwestern in the dual-degree Bienen-Weinberg program, majoring in saxophone performance and economics. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, he made his solo debut with the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra at age 16 and was the 2nd place recipient of the Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition. The event will allow the young artists to perform in front of thousands, receive national press coverage, and participate in workshops designed to launch a professional music career. The winners will also receive services and support from Yamaha Artist Relations. Her research on the music of Bruno Mantovani has been presented at national and international conferences, including the most recent World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia. Having performed across North America, Europe and Asia, Nicki has shared solo and chamber music performances at numerous venues throughout the globe. A strong advocate for female musicians, she is a member of the newly formed Limitless Collective, an artistic collective of female musicians of the highest caliber aimed at revolutionizing the dynamic between audience and creator. Erik Elmgren is a concert saxophonist, chamber musician, and educator dedicated to representing the flexibility of the instrument in compositions ranging from transcriptions to contemporary works. As part of his interest in citizen artistry in classical music, he seeks to share music with audiences of all types from concert halls to community centers. Erik maintains an active schedule as a soloist and chamber musician. He holds a Masters Degree in Saxophone Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, where he was also a saxophone teaching assistant and maintained an active performing schedule with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and the Eastman Saxophone Project, which is the first conductor-less saxophone ensemble in the United States to perform entirely from memory. In the summer of , Erik travelled with the Eastman Saxophone Project to present a two-week concert tour in China. While there he was recognized with numerous musical and academic awards including being named a Bronze Tablet Scholar as part of the top three percent of hisgraduating class.

Following the lead of their colleagues in France, who created the Association of French Saxophonists in , the North American Saxophone Alliance was established in under the leadership of Frederick Hemke. Since this time, NASA has offered state, regional, and international conferences attracting many important saxophonists to present performances, lectures and master classes, as-well-as found competitions for the next generation of classical and jazz saxophonists. NASA is the largest saxophone organization in the western hemisphere dedicated to the establishment of the saxophone as a medium of serious musical expression.
